We want The Pilcrow to operate as a proper pub.
The art on the walls must reflect this. Here are our self-imposed rules for pub art.
1 – Site Specific
The best pub art anchors a pub to its local area.
Think pictures of local football teams, local heroes and local scenery.
2 – Familiar
Good pub art doesn’t demand your attention - the best pub art is completely ignorable.
It must be in keeping with the surroundings and unprovocative.
3 – No Nonsense
We are building a pub not a gallery.
Pub art is folk art. Keep it simple stupid.
4 – Eclectic
Pub art doesn’t stick to one specific medium.
Expect oil paintings alongside photography and graphic design next to weird brass objects.
5 – Inspires Lying
This one is important. There needs to be art in the pub that provokes tall tales from locals.
“My Great Grandad caught that fish with his bare hands after drinking ten pints of Guinness.”
We’ll admit that putting a structure around pub art could seem the antithesis of what pub art should be but in this project we are carefully considering every little detail and it’s only fair that we pay as much attention to our art as we do to our skirting boards.
